BLAQVERSITY MAGAZINE: HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY AS AN AUTHOR CAME ABOUT?

AVALON BROWN: About ten years ago I starting thinking about writing a book because of the struggles I was going thru in nursing. I kept telling myself one day I’m going to write a book about all this stuff. In 20122 I wrote about my nursing career and the struggles. “It Was The Devil All Along

BLAQVERSITY: WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WRITING BOOKS?

AVALON: It keeps me busy because I don’t have a TV in the house by choice. It also stimulates my minds with different thoughts.

BLAQVERSITY: AS AN AUTHOR, WHAT DO YOU FEEL LIKE THE CHALLENGES ARE?

AVALON: The most challenge I find is selling the books and having the time to go out and about promoting myself because of my work hours.

BLAQVERSITY: LET’S TALK ABOUT ALL THE BOOKS YOU HAVE PUBLISHED SO FAR WITHIN THE LAST TWO YEARS.  WHERE DID THE INSPIRATION COME FROM?

AVALON: My Two Bishops & Mother—I wanted to write about my father’s journey into becoming a bishop and how he mentored a young man for years to take his place after his death as the bishop of the church he founded in 1964. This way the church would continue. My children books were inspired by a teacher who asked me if I ever thought about writing a book in my field of expertise. After writing the first book I got the ideal to write a book about each of my grandchildren. So far I have published “Been There’s A Mouse In The House” “My Dad & The Big Machine” Mommy Why Do I Have A Cold” and “That Needle is Not For Me” In each book my grandchild is the character in the story.

BLAQVERSITY: ARE YOU WORKING ON NEW BOOK PROJECTS FOR 2020?

AVALON: Yes I have written my next book which will be coming out this year. It’s also about one of my grandchildren called, “The Church I Love”

BLAQVERSITY: I ALSO READ THAT YOU ARE A NURSE IN NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.  TELL US HOW YOU BECAME A NURSE? WAS IT SOMETHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO ACHIEVE?

AVALON: I always wanted to be a nurse since childhood.  I worked as a post-op surgical nurse for 12 years, then a primary nurse for 6 years in a hospital. For the last 20 years, I worked as charge nurse in an outpatient dialysis facility. I now work as an Infection Preventionist in a hospital.

BLAQVERSITY: A LOT OF AUTHORS HAVE TROUBLE PROMOTING AND MARKETING THEIR BOOKS.  WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR STRATEGIES WHEN IT COMES TO MARKETING? ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR AUTHORS AND NEW AUTHORS TRYING TO PUT THEIR BOOK OUT THERE?

AVALON: I tried to look for anything in flyer or on FB where someone is advertising vendors needed. I also try to join a lot of the author groups because people advertise different things in those groups that helps you get the word out about your book. And I try to go to events where I may be able to network with other authors to see what they are doing to get the word out about their books.

BLAQVERSITY: WHAT GENRES DO YOU WRITE ON?

AVALON: I’ve written a memoir. A novel. Right now I am writing on children books.
