BlaQ Her-Story with Author Rhonda Stewart

I am Rhonda P. Stewart. I am a proud native Chicagoan from the South side, a graduate of Hyde Park Career Academy and Florida A&M University, and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. I am a loving mother of a daughter, in Dallas, Texas, and three step-children in the South.

I am a career professional, having worked in corporate sales, leadership and training for over 30 years.

Damn! My Damn Life chronicles my journey of discovery to answer the question, “What happens when you need to start over?”

I understand how scary it can be. I went through the process when I decided in my early 50’s to step out on faith with courage to pursue my passion. I know and understand the fear of starting over, but I chose me.

Damn! My Damn Life explains how I got to this point. As your read my book, I want you to know there is life AFTER …. whatever that after is! You too can live your best Damn life!”

“I woke up frustrated because I had NO desire to write a book. Hell, I didn’t even want to read a book. So,I was sharing this story with my daughter  the next day after the dream. I remember asking her, “why would God ask ME to write a book”? I’m no author? I then shared, God didn’t even give me a name for this book and I I looked at my daughter extremely frustrated and sighed and whispered, Damn!”

BLAQVERSITY MAGAZINE: WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE AN AUTHOR?

RHONDA STEWART:   February 2019. I made a promise to myself that I would step out of Fear and commit to a Faith walk to try my hand at being an Author. I started unwillingly on this journey in 2016 and I wrote a few pages every year. It was painful. However, in 2019,  I stopped complaining and speaking negatively of the writing process and I just committed myself to completing the book.

BLAQVERSITY: TELL US ABOUT THE CHRONICLES DAMN! MY DAMN LIFE.  HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THAT CONCEPT?

RHONDA: DAMN! My Damn Life takes you on humorous yet introspective journey of my life. This book won as a a finalist in the Humor category for The 2019 Best Book Award from The American BookFest.com. I chronicle 5 critical points in my life that I found myself at a fork in the road. At each stop I’ve encountered incidents or circumstances where I would pause and say, Damn! What’s next? And, I found myself starting over, making changes and eventually planning my next Damn steps.

This concept came from a dream that I had in the Summer of 2016. I had just received a huge acknowledgement from my job, a very nice pay increase and I had moved into a new place. All should have been well but it wasn’t. So, in mid- July, I had a short dream that I was sitting across from the Lord and He told me that I was going to write a book and this book would impact many.

I woke up frustrated because I had NO desire to write a book. Hell, I didn’t even want to read a book. So,I was sharing this story with my daughter  the next day after the dream. I remember asking her, “why would God ask ME to write a book”? I’m no author? I then shared, God didn’t even give me a name for this book and I I looked at my daughter extremely frustrated and sighed and whispered, Damn!

She screamed, that’s it momma! She beamed from ear to ear and stated, “ that’s the title of your book!”

BLAQVERSITY: HOW HAS STARTING OVER IN YOUR LIFE MADE YOU A BETTER PERSON? WHAT DID YOU CHOSE TO START OVER IN YOUR 50’S?

RHONDA: Starting over in key areas of my life, Childhood, College, Career, and Relationships made me a better person because it strengthened me. I realized that I am stronger than I feel and wiser than I give myself credit for at times. I also realized that Courage comes before Confidence.

In my 50’s, I started on my  journey of being single and complete after I allowed a 15 year marriage/18 year  relationship to come to an end.

BLAQVERSITY: WHEN YOU STARTED OVER IN LIFE, HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR PASSION?

RHONDA: When you read my book, you will see that I always displayed a passion for getting things done and being a leader. I have a true passion for getting individuals or teams to reach their true potential in life.

BLAQVERSITY: IF SOMEONE DECIDES THAT THEY WANT TO START OVER IN LIFE, WHAT ADVICE OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?

RHONDA: Write out everything. There is a “cost” or a “consequence “ for  everything that you do.

  1. Write out a Goal or a desired outcome.
  2. Write out the steps that you need to take to achieve your goal/outcome.
  3. Do you homework. Research your Next, There are always Ropes to Skip and Ropes to know.
  4. Assess the Costs needed to successfully carry out your steps to achieve your goal/outcome?
  5. Pray over your desired goal, your processes, the new people that you will encounter along thins journey and your financial standings.
  6. Take a partner to hold you accountable to your dreams and aspirations.
  7. Have someone to review your plan.
  8. Pray again.
  9. Act . Don’t just think or say…DO!

BLAQVERSITY: WHAT YEAR WAS YOUR BOOK PUBLISHED?

RHONDA: It was published in 2019

BLAQVERSITY: BESIDES BEING A PUBLISHED AUTHOR, HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT BECOMING A MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER AND TALKING ABOUT YOUR BOOK?

RHONDA: Yes. I have spoken at a couple of venues to audiences that knew me in different periods of my life. At these events, I was urged to begin speaking to masses to share my Damn Story!

BLAQVERSITY: ARE YOU WORKING ON ANY NEW PROJECTS FOR THIS YEAR? IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY?

RHONDA: Yes, I will be at the African American book fair in Detroit, Michigan  for a black history month book event February 22, 2020.

My book will be released in eBook format by the end of March 2020.

I am also starting on DAMN! 2.

BLAQVERSITY: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ACHIEVE FROM BEING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS OWNER AND AUTHOR?

RHONDA: I would like to speak on large platforms to women about the Damns! In our lives and Starting Damn Over.

I would love to share my book to women in shelters and other outlets where women are at a disadvantage to share with them some of my obstacles and what I’ve overcome and hopefully they can relate to me and my Idiosyncrasies and realize they can change their Damns if they really wanted to, with the right support system and tools.
