Author Feature with Urban Lit Author Kimberlaine Johnson aka BLUNT

Fearless in her endeavors and bold in her approach, Kimberlaine Johnson aka BLUNT, takes no prisoners when navigating her way through her journey of the arts. Whether is penning a 5 star read, scripting a motion picture, directing a web series, songwriting and singing along to her own tune, or blessing audiences with her motivational messages, this Black Lady Under New Terms definitely marches to the beat of her own drum. Mother of two who are 18 years apart in age, BLUNT prides herself on the fact that her children are following in her footsteps with her son, also a writer, on the brink of a major record deal and her daughter taking the Nestea plunge working for BLUNT’s publishing company, Queen B Publications. There are no limits for this literary dynamo as she expands her brand to now include reality television. Executive Producer is the hat she wears on the brand new reality show: Real Women of RVA and she wears it well.

Promoting is not challenging. The challenge lies in getting people to pay attention to your promotions and act on them.”

BLAQVERSITY MAGAZINE: How did your journey as an author begin?

BLUNT: I began writing short stories in Junior High School, winning an Excellence in Writing Award from the New York City Board of Education. I wrote rhymes and R&B lyrics for personal tracks in the 80’s. And lastly, I entered into the game of urban lit in ’04, penning the infamous series, “Betrayal of a Hustler”.

BLAQVERSITY: Was becoming a writer something you always wanted to pursue?

BLUNT: Absolutely!

BLAQVERSITY: Who motivated you?

BLUNT: Authors Donald Goins and Omar Tyree, as well as Toni Morrison and Sistah Souljah definitely motivated me to write my first novel.

BLAQVERSITY: What are some of your favorite authors out right now?

BLUNT: Right now some of my favorite authors are underground street lit authors such as Lady Lissa and Shelli Marie, you can find them on Amazon.

BLAQVERSITY: Since becoming a published author, what challenges have you faced if any?

BLUNT: There are many different challenges, I would day staying relevant is THE most challenging factor. Keeping your inventory up can also be a challenge. Then there are times when you’re sitting on inventory for years. It can be a very unpredictable industry. Establishing an effective team can be challenging as well.

BLAQVERSITY: How many books have you written?

BLUNT: Currently, I have two 3 book series “Betrayal of a Hustler” and “Everything Money Can’t Buy”. The installments to these series are not best as standalones, but are still enjoyable as standalones. I also have “Aint no Love in These Streets” and “Rubberband Girls VA” which are novellas. Then there are the short stories in the anthologies in which I have been blessed to have been a part of, which are “Even Sinners Have Souls 1” and “Around the Way Girls 7 and 8”

BLAQVERSITY: What is your genre?

BLUNT: Urban literature better known as “Street Lit”

BLAQVERSITY: What message do you want your readers to take away when reading your books?

BLUNT: No matter who you are or where you come from – at the end of the day we are all the same – we all have struggles and we all have triumphs!

BLAQVERSITY: Do you have any writing tips/suggestions for any new author who wants to write their book but doesn’t know where to start?

BLUNT: Just start! Creating an outline helps tremendously. But the most important thing is to simply write! Also there are self-help books on how to keep the momentum going and to help you decide on whether you want to self-publish or go with a publishing company.

BLAQVERSITY: Are you currently working on any new book projects?

BLUNT: I’m actually about to get back into Part 4 of Betrayal of a Hustler (The Break of Dawn) I also plan to expand on Rubber Band Girls VA.

BLAQVERSITY: When can we expect them to be released?
BLUNT: Sometime in 2022.
BLAQVERSITY: What does being an author mean to you?

BLUNT: It means EVERYTHING to me. It’s my dream job and I’m literally living my dream! It doesn’t get any better than that!

BLAQVERSITY: Where do you see yourself five years from now?

BLUNT: I see myself in film production. Right now I’m producing a reality TV show: Real Women of RVA. Check it out on YouTube. In the near future I will be casting for my web series for “Everything Money Can’t Buy”. Films will be done for the Betrayal of a Hustler series.

BLAQVERSITY: Have you ever thought about being an author full-time?

BLUNT: I have thought about it. Unfortunately, the proceeds aren’t enough for me to write full-time, at least not right now.

BLAQVERSITY: If you could co-author with any author in the world, who would it be and why?

BLUNT: It would be the late great Donald Goins because his writings are so true to life and epitomizes my former world.

BLAQVERSITY: Tell us about your marketing strategies as an author?

BLUNT: I primarily market through social media. I post my links and literary products in various groups.

BLAQVERSITY: Do you find it to be challenging at times when promoting your books?

BLUNT: Promoting is not challenging. The challenge lies in getting people to pay attention to your promotions and act on them.

BLAQVERSITY: How can readers connect with you and support you?

BLUNT: Please visit my “BLUNT” author page on Facebook. There you can see all of the books that I offer and you can message me for direct sales. My website for my publishing company Queen B Publications is currently under construction and will be up and running very soon!
