“I want my stories to encapsulate my readers and take them away to a peaceful place where they can curl up, laugh out loud, cry if they must and laugh again.  Then I want them to be able to relate to the stories and know they are real for someone”.

BLAQVERSITY MAGAZINE: How did your journey as an author began?
RUE MAYWEATHER: God called me to write at age 11, I was forced to respond at age 58.
BLAQVERSITY: Was becoming a writer something you always wanted to pursue? Who motivated you?
RUE: Ironically, I had no interest in becoming a writer.  My professional goal was to be a Fashion Designer.  I was motivated by a “what” the Iraq war to write my book.  I was deployed.
BLAQVERSITY: What are some of your favorite authors out right now?
RUE: Books by Metro Authors Group
BLAQVERSITY: Since becoming a published author, what challenges have you faced if any?
RUE: Promoting my book externally to people I don’t know.
BLAQVERSITY: How many books have you written? What is your genre?
RUE: ‘No Gold’ is my first book.  My second book is due for release later this year.   My book genre is Memoir and Fiction.
BLAQVERSITY: What message do you want your readers to take away when reading your books?
RUE: I want my stories to encapsulate my readers and take them away to a peaceful place where they can curl up, laugh out loud, cry if they must and laugh again.  Then I want them to be able to relate to the stories and know they are real for someone.
BLAQVERSITY: Do you have any writing tips/suggestions for any new author who wants to write their book but doesn’t know where to start?
RUE: Yes, first let go of fear and write.  Second, don’t broadcast your dream, just do it.  Do some research on your own to ensure you have expenses for copyright, professional editing, professional headshot and book cover when the time come.
BLAQVERSITY: Are you currently working on any new book projects? If so, when can we expect them to be released?
RUE: Thanks for asking! Yes, I do have a new project in the works, a new fiction that will have you laughing from page one schedule for release later this year.
BLAQVERSITY: What does being an author mean to you?
RUE: Great question! Being an author means I have an unbiased platform to tell a story my way using my imagination.  It’s like cooking I can place any ingredients in it I choose.  In the end, it’s a book, not yours, not the way someone else would have baked or prepared it but my way.
BLAQVERSITY: Where do you see yourself five years from now?
RUE: Five years from now I believe both of my books will be in movie form.
BLAQVERSITY: Have you ever thought about being an author full-time?
RUE: Yes, but I write when God gives me something to write.
BLAQVERSITY: If you could co-author with any author in the world, who would it be and why?
RUE: Former President Barack Obama.  He’s open minded, unbiased and worldly.  Has a fluid concept of life issues yet can always find humor in everything.  I was part of his Red Team to solve the Iraq war.
BLAQVERSITY: Tell us about your marketing strategies as an author? Do you find it to be challenging at times when promoting your books?
RUE: For my first book, I wrote 100 names of people I knew in a journal and said I will contact these individuals first.  I was Blessed to sell more than 100 in the first 7 days.  Yet my  book didn’t sell as well on Amazon. For my second book, I’ve started promoting on Facebook and I already have pre orders.
BLAQVERSITY: How can readers connect with you and support you?
