Makala Taylor has been writing poetry since the age of 13. It all started with her love of Edgar Allen Poe. Discovering her love for verbal expression, she started writing her thoughts, feelings, and emotions in a journal. Once she matured in her writing she decided it was time to share her God given gift with the world. So, she signed on with Elliott Night Professionals through taking this major step her gift was upgraded, enhanced, and taken to the next level. Makala’s enthusiasm for raising eyebrows and creating shock factors with her play on words have left many speechless. To this day she conquers all types of key issues from homosexual acceptance to police brutality. Not stopping at poetry, she has taken time to develop a T shirt line that is sure to have heads turning. As she has been slept on for years, be prepared to be awaken; As for what she has coming next you will have to wait and see. But trust me its sure to be mind blowing.
“Honestly, I never wanted to be an Author for years. I filled dozens of journals with tears and emotions. I wasn’t motivated to share my poetry with the world until my mother passed away. In that moment I knew life is too short to live with regret, so in 2013 I self published two books and have been on this journey every since.”
BLAQVERSITY MAGAZINE: How did your journey as an author began?
MAKALA TAYLOR: My Journey began in 1994 after a traumatizing time in my life.
BLAQVERSITY: Was becoming a writer something you always wanted to pursue? Who motivated you?
MAKALA: Honestly, I never wanted to be an Author for years. I filled dozens of journals with tears and emotions. I wasn’t motivated to share my poetry with the world until my mother passed away. In that moment I knew life is too short to live with regret, so in 2013 I self published two books and have been on this journey every since.
BLAQVERSITY: What are some of your favorite authors out right now?
MAKALA: I’m into Jazar Kahr and Tivona Elliott Clark. They’ve been the motivation behind stretching my pen.
BLAQVERSITY: Since becoming a published author, what challenges have you faced if any?
MAKALA: The only challenges that I’ve encountered is people judging me by my sexuality and putting me in an erotica box.
BLAQVERSITY: How many books have you written? What is your genre?
MAKALA: Since I’ve been with Elliott Night Professionals I’ve written four books and revised three of my older books. As for genres, I have one book of erotic poetry but the rest are a mix of different genres.
BLAQVERSITY: What message do you want your readers to take away when reading your books?
MAKALA: The message I’m sending is that self -acceptance is all that should matter in this life and its OK not to be OK all the time. You’re human so give yourself a break!
BLAQVERSITY: Do you have any writing tips/suggestions for any new author who wants to write their book but doesn’t know where to start?
MAKALA: My only advice is follow your strengths and don’t try and write like someone else because you’ll be doing yourself a disservice.
BLAQVERSITY: Are you currently working on any new book projects? If so, when can we expect them to be released?
MAKALA: I’ll be coming out with my last book of poetry which will be released later on in the year.
BLAQVERSITY: What does being an author mean to you?
MAKALA: What being an author means to me is having my story and possibly other people’s story told, so others can relate and come to an mutual understanding that we all have a lot in common.
BLAQVERSITY: Where do you see yourself five years from now?
MAKALA: Five years from now I see myself doing motivational speaking and coaching individuals on how not to let life stunt your professional growth.
BLAQVERSITY: Have you ever thought about being an author full-time?
MAKALA: I’m already a full time author so now its time to give my brain a vacation to focus on other business ventures.
BLAQVERSITY: If you could co-author with any author in the world, who would it be and why?
MAKALA: I would love to co-author with Zane, because even though she came out with erotica for women who love women, I think it could’ve been written with more intimacy on the pages.
BLAQVERSITY: Tell us about your marketing strategies as an author? Do you find it to be challenging at times when promoting your books?
MAKALA: My marketing strategy is to stand out as much as possible so when people come across a book trailer or poster it makes them intrigued enough to want to purchase my books.
