“For new writers I feel that they need to just take their time and really think about what they want to say to the readers.”

BLAQVERSITY MAGAZINE: How did your journey as an author began?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: In 2017 I began talking with my daughter about writing a book. She said that she would like for me to write a children’s book about a younger version of her. I thought about it and said that I would give it a try.
BLAQVERSITY: Was becoming a writer something you always wanted to pursue? Who motivated you?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: When I was in one of my child development classes one of my teachers had us to write a short children’s book as an assignment.. In the process of getting the book together it was challenging but fun. I ended up getting an A and my teacher kept my book to show other classes. At that point I thought maybe one day I could really do this. A few years later my daughter was the one who gave me that extra push to at least give it a try and see what happens.
BLAQVERSITY: What are some of your favorite authors out right now?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: I would have to say Vikki Jones and Lynn Richardson
BLAQVERSITY: Since becoming a published author, what challenges have you faced if any?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: The challenges that I have faced is marketing. I work full-time so I don’t really have enough time to get out and self promote.
BLAQVERSITY: How many books have you written? What is your genre?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: I have written one book so far and it’s a children’s book for ages 3-9.

BLAQVERSITY: What message do you want your readers to take away when reading your books?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: I want parent’s to be able to say that their child learned something from reading my book.
BLAQVERSITY: Do you have any writing tips/suggestions for any new author who wants to write their book but doesn’t know where to start?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: For new writers I feel that they need to just take their time and really think about what they want to say to the readers.
BLAQVERSITY: Are you currently working on any new book projects? If so, when can we expect them to be released?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: I’m currently working on another children’s book that I hope to have out by the end of the year.

BLAQVERSITY: What does being an author mean to you?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: For me being an author means being a person that can create a body of work that children around the world can enjoy.
BLAQVERSITY: Where do you see yourself five years from now?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: Five years from now I would like to have 5 or more books published along with some children’s coloring books and toys to go along with them.
BLAQVERSITY: Have you ever thought about being an author full-time?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: To be honest the thought has never really crossed my mind.
BLAQVERSITY: If you could co-author with any author in the world, who would it be and why?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: It would be Vikki Jones because she is a wonderful writer as well as a business woman.  I know that we could come up with an amazing book for children pertaining how to start young building wealth.
BLAQVERSITY: Tell us about your marketing strategies as an author? Do you find it to be challenging at times when promoting your books?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: The marketing strategies that I have used are having my book on Amazon. Barnes and Noble, and other book sites. I have had my book reviewed by a few social media influencers as well. I have found it challenging because I don’t have a lot of free time to go out myself and do a lot of self promotions.
BLAQVERSITY: How can readers connect with you and support you?
DEVENUS LASHAWN: Readers can find my book pages on Facebook at “The Adventures of Lexi” and also Instagram “_theadventuresoflexi_”. Also my personal pages on Facebook and Instagram are “Devenus Lashawn”
