“Find your own voice. If you’re interested in writing in a certain genre most likely you are a reader of it. Try not to mimic another author’s style. Tell your story in the most authentic way for you. Write the story you would want to read.”
BLAQVERSITY MAGAZINE: How did your journey as an author began?
TIERA JONES: My writing journey began at the age of 6. I wrote my first short story on my big momma’s typewriter with a large glass of chocolate milk. It was a Bonnie and Clyde type story. Lol. Needless to say I got in a little trouble and was banned from the typewriter.
BLAQVERSITY: Was becoming a writer something you always wanted to pursue? Who motivated you?
TIERA: I’ve always enjoyed writing but I never thought I could be a writer. It was an ex who convinced me that I could make money for my stories.
BLAQVERSITY: What are some of your favorite authors out right now?
TIERA: I haven’t been following too many authors these days but Trenae. Queen T, Perri Sullivan and of course myself, Tiera M. Jones.
BLAQVERSITY: Since becoming a published author, what challenges have you faced if any?
TIERA: This journey has been something else. I started as a self-published author with no idea about the actual industry. There was a lot of trial and error and learning as I went. I signed to Urban Diamond and realized what I learned via self-publishing was just the tip of the iceberg. I had no idea about the importance of a nice cover by an actual graphic designer. I had no idea about book events to get your name and book out to the masses. Unexpectedly, Urban Diamond had to shut down but fortunately, I was given my professional cover and re-edited manuscript free of charge. It was a pleasant surprise and I’m thankful Urban Diamond was professional through to the end. Now, I’m back on my indie grind and I have made so many connections its unreal.
BLAQVERSITY: How many books have you written? What is your genre?
TIERA: I’ve written and published 2 books, Karma and Karma II: Second Chances. Started on 3 others and am a part of an anthology, Chasing The Sun: A Summer of Love. I write Urban fiction/romance
BLAQVERSITY: What message do you want your readers to take away when reading your books?
TIERA: That women in urban fiction are not monolithic just like in the real world.
BLAQVERSITY: Do you have any writing tips/suggestions for any new author who wants to write their book but doesn’t know where to start?
TIERA: Find your own voice. If you’re interested in writing in a certain genre most likely you are a reader of it. Try not to mimic another author’s style. Tell your story in the most authentic way for you. Write the story you would want to read.
BLAQVERSITY: Are you currently working on any new book projects? If so, when can we expect them to be released?
TIERA: Yes, I’m currently working on a collection of short stories, In My Mind.
BLAQVERSITY: What does being an author mean to you?
TIERA: It means a lot to me. I have so many stories in my mind and to be able to write them out and give it to the masses is humbling.
BLAQVERSITY: Where do you see yourself five years from now?
TIERA: I see myself winning an NAACP Image Award for literature as well of a playwright.
BLAQVERSITY: Have you ever thought about being an author full-time?
TIERA: Yes, I think about it all the time. I can’t wait to be able to put my full attention to my craft.
BLAQVERSITY: If you could co-author with any author in the world, who would it be and why?
TIERA: I don’t have an author in mind but I would love to collaborate with a male author.
BLAQVERSITY: Tell us about your marketing strategies as an author? Do you find it to be challenging at times when promoting your books?
TIERA: I post on social media, participate in a lot of interviews but my best way is at book events. I’m able to showcase my personality fully and able to get my work out.
BLAQVERSITY: How can readers connect with you and support you?
TIERA: Readers can connect with me on Facebook: Tiera Jai The Author. Instagram: tiera_jai_theauthor. If you aren’t on social media you can email me: firstname.lastname@example.org or Google Tiera M. Jones. My books are available on Amazon.com
