Business Boss and Mom Making Moves with Blogging, New Show ‘House of Lafond’ and Parenthood

“Being an only child is what inspired me to have a large family. My husband is the youngest of six. Seeing how he and his siblings interact and support each other was something I have always wanted. We take that and instill it in our children.”

VERSAFI MAGAZINE: YOU HAVE SUCH A SWEET HEART AND A SWEET SPIRIT. I CAN FEEL IT WHILE READING ABOUT YOU. THE FACT THAT YOU ARE FAMILY ORIENTED SAYS A LOT. WHAT DOES FAMILY MEAN TO YOU?

JOHNETTA LAFOND: Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. Family means everything to me. I grew up as an only child to a single mother. My mom would remind me that it was she and I against every obstacle. Now that I have my own family, I take that with me. It’s me and my family against all odds. We are a team.

VERSAFI: HOW ARE YOU A FAMILY INFLUENCER IN YOUR COMMUNITY?

JOHNETTA: I really care about informing my community about all things when it comes to children and family. It may be about the newest helpful products or even procedures. I immerse myself in information to be able to share it with my community of mothers.

VERSAFI: BLOGGING IS A GREAT TOOL TO HAVE IF YOU LOVE WRITING AND IN CAPTURING ALL THE PRECIOUS MOMENTS IN YOUR LIFE. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BLOGGING AND WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY BLOG ABOUT?

JOHNETTA: I have been blogging for about 4 years. My blog is based off of my family and the experiences that I have while parenting. I talk about things that I have found that work or don’t work for our family with the hope that other parents will be educated, inspired or motivated.

VERSAFI: HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT VLOGGING?

JOHNETTA: I have definitely considered vlogging and have in fact, started a YouTube channel. I haven’t completely delved into it though. I am a little camera shy.

VERSAFI: GROWING UP DID YOU ENJOY BEING AN ONLY CHILD OR DID YOU WISH YOU HAD SIBLINGS?

JOHNETTA: I hated being an only child growing up. It was extremely lonely. I always wanted to be at a friend’s house for company.

VERSAFI: HOW DOES BEING MARRIED WITH FOUR KIDS AND ONE ON THE WAY MAKE YOU FEEL CONSIDERING YOU WERE AN ONLY CHILD?

JOHNETTA: Being an only child is what inspired me to have a large family. My husband is the youngest of six. Seeing how he and his siblings interact and support each other was something I have always wanted. We take that and instill it in our children.

VERSAFI: YOU WERE DIAGNOSED WITH ENDOMETRISIS AS A TEEN, HAVE YOU EXPERIENED ANY MAJOR COMPLICATIONS FROM THAT?

JOHNETTA: I have not had any major complications since being diagnosed with endometriosis. However, I did have surgery when I was a senior in high school. I had pain every so often.
Since having children though, the pain and consistency have definitely decreased.

VERSAFI: HAS IT AFFECTED YOU AT ALL WHILE BEING PREGNANT ALL FIVE TIMES?

JOHNETTA: Being pregnant actually allows the symptoms to stop. Since I am not ovulating, there is no pain. That is actually one of the benefits of being pregnant with endometriosis.

VERSAFI: IT’S MY UNDERSTANDING THAT YOU HAD A GENDER REVEAL OF YOUR FIFTH CHILD ON INSTAGRAM. IS IT SAFE TO LET THE READERS KNOW THE GENDER OF THE BABY?

JOHNETTA: We have not yet revealed the gender of Baby Lafond #5. We are hoping to do so soon though. So, stay tuned!

VERSAFI: WHAT IS A NORMAL DAY LIKE WITH THE KIDS IN THE HOUSE? WITH THE RECENT LOCKDOWN DUE TO COVID-19, HOW DO YOU BALANCE SELF-CARE AND THE KIDS?

JOHNETTA: Our lives have not drastically changed since being on lockdown. I was often home with the children especially since we homeschool. A normal day for us looks like breakfast and free time, then it’s clean up time. The children all take a nap in the afternoon including my eldest who is five. I take that time for myself to rest, eat, clean, write, and whatever I need to do for at least an hour. When my oldest wakes up she does her school lessons. My second also does lessons every once in a while, but we aren’t as strict with her yet. We all do activities together. Then, we eat dinner, and get ready for bed. We are very laid back but with structure.

VERSAFI: TELL US MORE ABOUT HOUSE OF LAFOND, AND THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT.

JOHNETTA: House of Lafond started as a blog about our family. My husband and I are high school sweethearts who got married, started having children and moved to Hollywood. It really is about our journey as a couple and as a family. It has however, evolved to an online community blog. It’s a hub where I get to share information, tips, resources, newest innovations and products with other moms/parents. As parents of 5 children, my husband and I are often asked how we’re able to do it all, and this blog has been a valuable platform for me to be able to share what we’ve learned with other moms and the parent community.

VERSAFI: IT SEEMS LIKE YOU ALSO PUT OUT A GREAT DEAL OF VIDEO CONTENT, WHERE CAN WE FIND IT?

JOHNETTA: We have been putting out content since BlackPlanet, an African-American social networking community. My husband and I have been documenting our relationship since Facebook and Instagram started. We really started putting more of an effort to produce content after we posted a video of our first daughter in 2015, and it went viral with 8 million views. Our content is currently on Instagram @johnettalafond and @hashimlafond and also on YouTube Houseoflafond

VERSAFI: HOW ARE YOU WITH THE LOCKDOWN, BEING PREGNANT, HAVING TO HOMESCHOOL AND CARE FOR THE HUBBY AND FOUR KIDS AS WELL? ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT THE REOPENING?

JOHNETTA: Again, I don’t mind being home with the children and my husband, that’s very typical for us. However, with the recent lockdown and certain restrictions, I think one of the main things we’re unable to do is come together for doctor’s appointments. I’m pretty disappointed about that since one the main ways I keep my children involved and excited about the new addition to our family are our trips to the doctor. Not to mention, even grocery shopping has become an ordeal. The lines outside of stores are extremely long, and imposed limitations on items you’re allowed to buy means extra trips to the grocery store. We have a large family to tote around and with me pregnant, grocery trips have been inconvenient to say the least. I am not excited for things to fully reopen until I know it is safe. All of this will be for nothing if it is not safe to open. If numbers of cases are dropping and a cure exists then I’m all for the reopening, but until then we’re okay to stay home.

VERSAFI: I HEARD PLANS OF A HOUSE OF LAFOND SHOW, CAN YOU GIVE US A LITTLE TEASER ON WHAT FANS CAN EXPECT, AND WHAT FAMILY ANTICS ARE IN STORE?

JOHNETTA: We are still working on a lot of logistics regarding our show. But we plan on sharing as much as possible with our fans. We are an open family and have some really interesting experiences. So, we plan on sharing birth stories of the children and even our journey of how we packed the car and drove across the country with two babies and nowhere to go.

VERSAFI: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO CREATE THE SHOW AROUND YOUR HUSBAND, YOU AND THE KIDS?

JOHNETTA: The Show is about our family because that is what we know and love. We spend a great deal of time together and it is what inspire and motivate us. Life is not always easy but to go through it with my husband and our children is the greatest blessing. We want to share that with the world.

VERSAFI: WHAT FUTURE PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON?

JOHNETTA: I am always working on something especially with the opportunities that keeps coming our way. I am working on children’s books, reviews, a newsletter and even a podcast.

VERSAFI: HOW CAN THE READERS CONNECT WITH YOU?

JOHNETTA: I love making new connections! Please connect with me through Instagram @johnettalafond and follow along on our journey on YouTube at Houseoflafond and my website at http://www.houseoflafond.com
