Embracing her Afro-Latina Roots De’Anna Alvarez Creates Naked Campaign to Empower Women of all Color

“My mission with Naked is to help women understand that your past does not define you and that you can live a beautiful life mentally, physically, spiritually, financially and of course sexually.”

VERSAFI MAGAZINE: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR STOPPING BY TO TALK TO VERSAFI ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY OF MENTAL HEALTH.

DE’ANNA LIZ My pleasure! Thank you for having me!

VERSAFI: TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY OF MENTAL HEALTH.WHAT HAVE YOU BATTELED WITH?

DE’ANNA: My journey of mental health has always been an up and down roller coaster; a love- hate relationship, until I started to really dig deep about who I was as an individual. I was no longer in denial . As a young girl I can say that my parents raised me well and tried to protect me the best that they could. But I went through things as a young girl and didn’t know how to express the hurt, anger and emptiness I felt. I was raped at the age of 15, by the time I was 18 I had an abortion. Fast forward to college I was raped again. I’ve come face- to- face with domestic violence and was always that female who said it couldn’t be or wouldn’t be me. Of course those are the short brief statements. My poem “Picture Perfect” describes in depth of more of what occurred.

VERSAFI: BECAUSE MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH, WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY DO AS AN ADVOCATE AND TO BRING AWARENESS?

DE’ANNA: What I normally do as an advocate is host fashion shows where girls walk to an empowering song with running mascara to help liberate them. I created a platform so women can have a voice and no longer feel like they are alone using art and fashion poetry.

VERSAFI: HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH TH CONCEPT OF CREATING THE DARE TO BE NAKED CAMPAIGN?

DE’ANNA: The concept came from my constant hurt and hiding in my own skin. I wanted to create something powerful, controversial, and empowering.

VERSAFI: WHAT IS YOUR MISSION WITH YOUR CAMPAIGN?

DE’ANNA: My mission with Naked is to help women understand that your past does not define you and that you can live a beautiful life mentally, physically, spiritually, financially and of course sexually.

VERSAFI: AS A CREATIVE VISIONAIRE, WHAT PROJECTS ARE YOU PLANNING NEXT FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR?

DE’ANNA: I will be interviewing women for my YouTube channel, raffling out self care packages, and hopefully planning some events.

VERSAFI: DO YOU THINK MENTAL HEALTH IN THE  COMMUNITY IS TALKED ABOUT ENOUGH?

DE’ANNA: I do not think mental health is spoken upon individuals enough no matter what race you are. Unfortunately, being a woman of color, it was definitely swept under the rug more often than it should of. This effects us long term and the relationships we are cultivating. This is why Naked was created so we can make speaking about mental health the norm and to help heal individuals to break that cycle.

VERSAFI: AS A SURVIVOR OF YOUR PERSONAL PAST JOURNEY, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO TELL OTHER WOMEN WHO IS DEALING WITH THE SAME THING?

DE’ANNA: As a survivor I would tell women that you aren’t alone as cliché as it might sound.

VERSAFI: WHAT IS NEXT FOR THE NAKED CAMPAIGN?

DE’ANNA: Well I officially became a certified life coach so my goal to is to help and continue to guide women and continue to keep finding innovative ways to spread comfortability of mental health conversations.

VERSAFI: HOW CAN READERS CONNECT WITH YOU AND TO SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN?

DE’ANNA: Please stay connected with me by going on the website nakedcampaign.com @deannaliz on ig or @thenakedcampaign
