“Being totally transparent, death is why I started my business. My family suffered the loss of my cousin (whom I affectionately always referred to as my twin) unexpectedly in April 2018. Needless to say, I was completely heartbroken and devastated. For a long time, I struggled with finding the strength to go on; he was six months younger than me so in a way he was always right behind me in life though in many ways he was the leader.”

VERSAFI: What inspired you to start your business?
KIMBERLY: Being totally transparent, death is why I started my business. My family suffered the loss of my cousin (whom I affectionately always referred to as my twin) unexpectedly in April 2018. Needless to say, I was completely heartbroken and devastated. For a long time, I struggled with finding the strength to go on; he was six months younger than me so in a way he was always right behind me in life though in many ways he was the leader. The one year anniversary of his untimely passing I began to really reflect on his legacy and pray deeply. I knew there had to be a deeper meaning behind God taking him from us at that time. I reflected on the numerous conversations and secrets we shared together. One day in April it hit me, eureka! It was my time to be the entrepreneur in the family. It was my time to use the tools God gave me and apply the knowledge my cousin-twin instilled in me. From the moment I had the thought until it everything came together, it was less than a month. It was meant to be. Lawson Learning Academy, LLC was meant to be my legacy.
VERSAFI: How many books have you written or co-authored?
KIMBERLY: I have authored four books and co-authored two anthologies.
VERSAFI: Were there any challenges you faced in your career? If so, what solutions did you come up with?
KIMBERLY: Challenges is not a word I really use in my business. Instead, I view them as opportunities to learn and grow. If I had to name or describe a challenge I would say that I am my biggest challenge. Sometimes my thinking is what gets in my way. I am not always in the mind frame to look for ways adversity is an opportunity for me to grow and glow. When this happens I have a conversation with myself that always begins with the same question, are you ready to quit? The answer is always no. So then I say to myself, okay let’s get on with it then. And from that moment forward I only focus on ways to overcome adversity so that me and my brand can continue to grow and glow. There is no room for darkness in a room filled with light.
VERSAFI: Under your publishing company Sherelle Ink, Inc how many authors do you have? Any particular genre that you publish?
KIMBERLY: Sherrelle Ink, LLC is a boutique publishing company. Currently, I am working with three authors on their manuscripts. I do not focus on a particular genre when it comes to selecting authors. Instead, I focus on the message and mission.
VERSAFI: Where do you see yourself five years from now?
KIMBERLY: In five years I hope to still be making a difference in the world one person at a time. I would love to be a full-time entrepreneur with possibly a third business venture under my belt. I hope that over the next five years I can show my two sons what can be accomplished with hard work, tenacity, and humble beginnings. Truly, everything I do is for them, I want them to be proud of me and what I am building for them.
VERSAFI: How did you come up with the concept of your podcast Real Talk?
KIMBERLY: I am a connector! I love connecting with people and learning their stories. One day while having a conversation with some friends I was discussing with the possibility of starting an internet radio show, but I was not sure of what I would name the show and what I would focus the discussion on. My friend jokingly said, “real talk” because that your personal catchphrase. So Real Talk Radio was birth! After several years of success with Real Talk Radio, I ended the show to focus on motherhood for a few years, but I always missed the show. So after a few years off, I decided to revive Real Talk Radio, but as a podcast, Real Talk: The Podcast.
VERSAFI: What topics does your podcast discuss?
KIMBERLY: Real Talk: The Podcast focuses on real conversations with real people. I interview authors, artists, and entrepreneurs. I also focus on topics that are relevant to my listeners and/or the world.
VERSAFI: How can readers connect with you?
KIMBERLY: Readers can connect with me through my website www.KimberlyLawson.net . There my contact information and social media links are available. Readers are also able to connect with my podcast Real Talk: The Podcast through my website as well.
