“It feels amazing being a self-published author. I set my mind to something and boom it happens.”

VERSAFI MAGAZINE: How did your journey as an author began?

NICHOLE WILLIAMS: Writing poetry is where it starts. In 2018 I decided I wanted to reach more people with my poetry, so I started a poetry blog and then from there I started the author’s journey of publishing short stories.

VERSAFI: Poetry is very therapeutic and I love reading other people’s poetry! So was becoming a writer something you always wanted to pursue?

NICHOLE: Yes, in college I knew I wanted to do something with written communication, rather it is for a magazine, a newspaper, a TV show or just writing a book.

VERSAFI: Same here!! I had the desire when I was in college to write for my school’s newspaper and to freelance for other media platforms. Within your writing journey, who or what motivated you?

NICHOLE: Reading other poets and authors while attending college such as Nikki Giovanni, Alice Walker, Octavia Butler, Stephen King, and James Baldwin, I knew I could do what they do. They captured their readers which I do as well. Also getting reactions from people who enjoy my writing motivated me.

VERSAFI: Reading other people’s work is always refreshing! That is so motivating as well! What inspired  you to write your first book?

NICHOLE: It began when I entered a writing contest and didn’t win. I thought okay let me try something. I will take my short story and self-publish it and see what happens and many loved my story so from there I said writing stories is a continued goal in my life.

VERSAFI: Now that is a great inspirational story! Taking your own piece and run away with it to publish it. How does it feel to be a published author?

NICHOLE: It feels amazing being a self-published author. I set my mind to something and boom it happens.

VERSAFI: When you set your mind to something you want to do, a lot of accomplishments come out of that dream and vision. Well said! Now since becoming a published author, what challenges have you faced if any?

NICHOLE: The challenges I have faced is being clear in my future stories. I have so many ideas they overflow and sometimes they get discombobulated because I’m so excited to write. Also finding those who will read my stories, I have my loyal base readers, but I want to reach more and that can be a challenge.

VERSAFI: I’m the same way! Having all these ideas running through my brain, sometimes I forget to write it down. LOL. What genre do you write on?

NICHOLE: I write Romance and Mystery stories.

VERSAFI: That’s a great and interesting genre to write on. For your books,  What message do you want your readers to take away?

NICHOLE: I want my readers to be like wow she draws you in and makes you think and have different emotions.

VERSAFI: I think a lot of writers and authors definitely want that when readers read their book. Now that you are published, what does being an author mean to you?

NICHOLE: It means a lot, it means my pen holds weight in a world filled with blank pages ready to be written on with exceptional stories ready for readers to enjoy.

VERSAFI: Agreed! Where do you see yourself five years from now?

NICHOLE: In five years, I see me on a multi-city book tour for my poetry book or a thriller mystery book.

VERSAFI: Now that sounds like a great plan! You got this! So now have you ever thought about being an author full-time?

NICHOLE: Yes, many times, that is the goal and dream for me. To quit my full-time accountant job and be stable enough financially to write award-winning books every 6 months and live comfortably.

VERSAFI: That’s a lot of author’s goals! And me being an author as well, I would love to work for myself within my brand and with this magazine. Sometimes marketing can be a challenge so tell us about your marketing strategies as an author. Do you find it to be challenging at times when promoting your books?

NICHOLE: It was hard just trying to figure out what avenue to take. I didn’t know if I should pay for promotions or how it all worked. I mainly just used word of mouth. Then I started to use social media outlets to get more exposure.

VERSAFI: Yes! Finding that right platform to promote can be a bit challenging, but social media is great as well to market your business and books. Do you have any current book projects that you are working on?

NICHOLE: I am currently working on a chapbook for my poetry with a theme of going from being hurt to being loved and all the self-doubt, self-love, healing, and craziness in-between, which most can identify with.

VERSAFI: Sounds like a plan! So currently, how many books have you published in total?

NICHOLE: I have self-published five books, three romance and two mysteries.

VERSAFI: Awesome! With all these great reads you have available on Amazon, tell the readers how can they connect with you and support you?

NICHOLE: They can find me on: Facebook – Instagram – Goodreads – and my website –
