VERSAFI MAGAZINE: How did your journey as an author began?
ABNER: Me battling Sickle Cell Anemia and finally graduating from UCF in 2006. It took awhile to finish college and I moved to Atlanta back in 2011 for better healthcare. My health has improved tremendously since moving.
VERSAFI: Sickle Cell Disease is very important and a lot of people aren’t fully aware of what it is. That’s awesome that your health improved. Was becoming a writer something you always wanted to pursue?
ABNER: I have a associate’s degree in journalism, so I have been writing since around 2003. I wrote for the school newspaper in college.
VERSAFI: Who or what motivated you?
ABNER: No one. I started this back in 2005 or 2006 when I was at UCF. I started from scratch in 2018 with me being healthier and having more accomplishments. Always been something I wanted to eventually write.
VERSAFI: What inspired you to write your first book?
ABNER: Overcoming obstacles dealing with Sickle Cell Anemia.
VERSAFI: That’s a great inspiration! The fact that you can get through anything. How does it feel to be a published author?
ABNER: Great, it took a while. I finally did it and plan on writing more books.
VERSAFI: Indeed! Writing a book definitely doesn’t have a time on it! Since becoming a published author, what challenges have you faced if any?
ABNER: Trying to get more interviews and promote my book. More on my plate now, since I still have my website.
VERSAFI: What genre do you write on?
VERSAFI: That’s a great genre to write on! What message do you want your readers to take away when reading your book?
ABNER: You can do anything you put your mind to and never give up. Hopefully it motivates them to pursue their dreams in life.
VERSAFI: What does being an author mean to you?
ABNER: Another platform for me. Big accomplishment and I can add it as another accomplishment.
VERSAFI: Where do you see yourself five years from now?
ABNER: No idea with what’s going on in the world right now, Jesus may be back by then. If not, have a bigger platform for my website and bigger one as an author also. Covering NBA games by then and getting into most awards show then. My health still improving most importantly.
VERSAFI: I agree with you on that! Have you ever thought about being an author full-time?
ABNER: I wouldn’t want to, I can see me being a writer for magazine or newspaper full-time.
