Lights! Camera! Action! Black Filmmaker and Actress Making Boss Moves in the Film Industry

VERSAFI THE BLOG: TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT YOUR ACTING CAREER. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT?

Shakeela: Honestly, some of everything inspires me to be an actress. Before I realized I loved acting, I would just act out to avoid being teased in school. The teasing turned into laughs and compliments, then the self-esteem started to build, then came Miss. Confidence! We have to truly get to a place where we know it is okay to be confident in yourself. Finding myself was one of my biggest inspirations, to know the girl who was buried was beautiful, bold, and bodacious. I have learned to accept myself unconditionally. Now, I call it the popular term Godfidence Also, everyday people inspire me, those who don’t give up on their dreams no matter what! Knowing talented artists like Chadwick Boseman did not allow anything, I mean anything, not even Stage 4 Colon Cancer to stop him from living his passion and  purpose to serve God and others. My internal motivation went through the roof when hearing stories like this become a reality. Literally, no excuses will stop me from winning! Waking up every day is my inspiration, knowing my son is depending on me is my true WHY.

VERSAFI: THE ACTING INDUSTRY IS ALWAYS GROWING. WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT AS AN ACTRESS?

Shaleela: Patrice, there are so many talented artists in this world. I ask myself the same question all the time; what is going to make me stand out from the actress who’s the same height, weight, complexion as I am? It’s simple, I stand out because of my ability not to compare myself to others. I make sure to run my own race without looking left or right. Sure, we have similarities. How I perceive it is our stories have already been written, we just don’t know the story behind the journey. Everyone has a unique story. It took me sometime to figure this out, but what I know remains to be true, what’s for you is for you. So, I don’t walk in an audition to audition. I walk in the audition like I already got the part. I attract and manifest what I desire to be, do, and have. I strive to stand out to inspire others and make an impact in the world. Being a positive light to someone’s darkness is what grounds me. I also don’t take compliments lightly, whenever someone gives me a compliment. While I’m very appreciative, I also want to know what could I have done differently to be better. We have to be open for feedback and always remain flexible to grow anything in order to be the best you, in my opinion.

VERSAFI: HOW MANY FILMS HAVE YOU BEEN IN SO FAR?

Shakeela: I have been honored to star in 5 short films and 1 full length movie which is currently in production. Life of an OG Cougar, The Cleaner, Glory Mountain, Tiffany The Doll, and Love Bomb. I am grateful for the opportunities past, present, and future coming my way.

VERSAFI: ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON ANY NEW PROJECTS FOR THE REMAINING OF THE YEAR?

Shakeela: Yes, I am currently working on all I have mentioned, with the exception of two films which are completed; Tiffany The Doll and Love Bomb. I am ready to go full throttle and I pray I would always have plenty of time and energy to do the things I need to do. I look forward to 2020 ending with a Bang!

VERSAFI: BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC, HAS SOME OF YOUR PROJECTS BEEN DELAYED?

Shakeela: Absolutely!!!! This pandemic has put so much on hold. I was in the middle of doing 2 stage plays when the pandemic started. Most films were also placed on hold, but directors got creative making the films work for a smaller cast. So, yes we are getting back to work, just a little slow, still wanting to be safe than sorry, practicing safety precautions for everyone’s health. So, when everything started canceling or pushing back, projects definitely stopped. It brought so much confusion and challenges. I just feel with time and patience, our new normal will bring new and sustaining projects.

VERSAFI: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU CAME ACROSS IN YOUR CAREER?

Shakeela: Whew! Challenges, they come and go, but the 1 which seems to be a thorn, is deciding if I’m going to stop working my 9 to 5 and go full throttle with my acting career. I have had to turn down roles and miss out on auditioning due to the lack of time. Having a family and a full time job definitely limits my ability to attract more freedom and success into my life. However, I just believe my wildest dreams are coming true with discipline and commitment to my goals no matter what challenges I encounter throughout my career.

VERSAFI: CONGRATS OF THE WIN FOR BEST FILM ‘TIFFANY THE DOLL’ WHAT WAS IT LIKE STARRING IN THAT FILM?

Shakeela: Thank you so much Patrice. Working on Tiffany the Doll was Short and Amazing! LOL! it’s only 17mins long. I had the pleasure of working with some talented actors and actresses. Everyone was so professional and humble. Keep in mind, this was the first time any of us had ever worked together. There were no rehearsals due to the pandemic, So, we never met one another until film day. It was very impromptu!  I did get a little nervous at first because this was a first time experience for me with a scene. However, it was interesting being in this particular situation. It was fun to play this role, but you guys have to wait to see the movie to find out my nervous moment which turned out to be perfectly fine! Thank God for my professionalism, It was dope Patrice, it’s the adventurous me!

VERSAFI: WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF FIVE YEARS FROM NOW IN THE FILM INDUSTRY?

Shakeela: “Lord spare life” that’s an old wise slang my mother uses. lol. So Lord spare life; 5 years from now, I would love to be more personally and professionally developed in this industry and make a name for myself.  In five years, I see myself very productive, traveling the world to do what I love. All I need is within me. I truly feel blessings will always surround me. So, I will eventually want to relocate to the place where I can be afforded more opportunities by being closer to all the action in the acting world. I would love to have some platforms established for other men and women starting out with this career. I do know dreams can take money, but I have also learned money is an unlimited resource and it is always flowing my way. I’m grateful for the people who I can reach out to for advice and understanding of acting.  So, I definitely want to be in a position to reach back and help others. I aspire to attract massive  amounts of happiness, health, love, and wealth just doing what God has called me to do.

VERSAFI: IF YOU COULD WORK WITH ANY ACTOR OR ACTRESS DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

WOW!!! Patrice this is a tough one! Oh my, I can’t just pick One……There are so many amazing actors and actresses I look up to. I pray I get the opportunity to work with them all one day, but if I had to pick one, ok! I can’t pick just one…lol Denzel Washington, Angela Bassett, and Will Smith.  Will Smith does it for me on so many levels, we have similar personalities.  One of the things I admire about Will is his love for the craft. He doesn’t just love it, he is in love with it!  You can see it on the screen and his passion brings a different beast to the screen, I also love his drive, his character as himself, and then when he portrays his on screen characters you love them too. He is a deep brother and I’m so looking forward to working with him, Angela, and Denzel….speaking it into existence!

Thank you so much Patrice, for having me. It was truly a pleasure. The universe is bringing good things my way and I am already thankful for them. Readers!  Thank you so much for your support and taking the time out to get to know me. God always has a way of connecting others at the right place at the right time. I look forward to  followers! Just don’t stop believing you have enough, you do enough, and you are enough. Peace and Blessings Kingz and Queenz!
