A lot of people aren’t aware of this “invisible disease”. I say invisible because not a lot of people are educated on what Sickle Cell disease and who it affects. Versafi Media is proud to say that the platform will share warrior stories starting next month. I myself am a survivor and advocate of SCD and I wanted to create a special project dedicated to just the warriors in the community to shine light.
What is SCD?
Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic blood disorder that attacks the red blood cells. When the red blood cells aren’t flowing correctly and causes a traffic jam in the blood vessels, it stops the flow of oxygen and can cause pain in different parts of the body. The cells are “sickled” or shaped like a banana when the cells starts to sickle. Because this disease is genetic, anybody can’t get this disease. In order for a child to have SCD, both parents must be carriers of the Sickle Cell Trait. There is a 25% chance that the child will be born with the disease. The other chances is that the child will have either the trait or nothing at all.
With lots of people living with this disease, it affects everyone differently. Some people may experience chronic pain episodes frequently and some living with the disease won’t have pain or become hospitalized for years. If you know someone that has the disease and would like to share their warrior story, please email email@example.com to be considered. This will be an ongoing project for Versafi Media.
